As we embrace deep autumn colors and chunky knit sweaters (of course an occasional pumpkin spice latte), it’s also the perfect time to renew and enhance your makeup routine + kit (is this necessary, NO, but as we change out our closet from season to season, it’s fun to refresh your makeup bag as well).
It can sometimes be hard to jumpstart this new fall makeup look. We go from the hot and humid days of summer, where we tend to wear less makeup because a more (desired) sheer, dewy look that goes hand-in-hand with those long summer nights… right into heavy sweater-weather and rich tones, which lends itself to a time when you can go all out with your makeup. Instead of changing everything at once, maybe start with your eyes and makeup your way to your lips. You can add texture, volume, depth, and you’re no longer restricted by the humidity and linen maxi dresses that summertime can bring. Ladies, what I’m trying to say… nows the time to have fun with your makeup!
When I think ‘fall,’ I gravitate towards a bronzed smokey eyes that fade into jewel tones. I think of swapping out that bubble gum cheek for something that has more peach or plum based undertones. I think of a bold lip (I know matte is “in,” but it’s not for me, so I still stick with the gloss). I think of heavy liners, against a subtle contour. There is also something so beautiful of a playdown face with a super dramatic lip. This time of year can remain as carefree as what you may have been used to in the summer, but I will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone as we approach Autumn! Have fun! I don’t think you can go wrong and fall is the one season where… less isn’t necessarily more.

BRONZE + CONTOUR
Save your shimmery bronzers and high gloss highlighters for next summer. If you don’t want to invest in new bronzer/ contour products and the ones that you’re using have a high shine – that’s totally fine, just don’t use as much! Now that your tan is fading, so should those metallic finishes used on the cheeks and face. Autumn is the perfect time to embrace a matte, velvet, finish and a soft contoured look. During the summer months, it just feels right to play up a bare (sheer) face that it is dewy, natural and shimmers in all the right places (you know, that natural summer glow). What is essential as we approach fall is finding a contour palette (or this Benefit contour stick that I’ve been raving about for years) that isn’t overly saturated with orange hues. I love palettes that allow you to build color while lending itself to feel a little more natural. Cream-based contour colors and bronzers can be intimidating, however, this one is easy to use, otherwise, see below for some beautiful powder-based palettes/ compacts.
FOUNDATION
Dewy summer skin to a matte, velvet (dare I say sexy) complexion. You choose the coverage – light, medium or full – you can’t go wrong! One thing that I like to pay attention to is not only what’s happening with the colors as we change seasons, but the air temperature, which completely changes the texture (hello dry, flakey, skin) of our skin. I love a foundation that has medium to full coverage, with hydrating ingredients to prepare your skin for the colder months ahead! I still love my Primed + Peach Primer, Peach Perfect Foundation and Becca Illuminating Light Powder – I think it’s a great combo for my skin throughout the year. Here’s some others that will help the texture of your skin and still provide a flawless finish.
EYES
Bye, bye pool days and having to worry about that awful crease line right in the smack dab of the middle of your eyelid! Now is YOUR time to brush up (literally) on those eye makeup techniques and practice that smokey eye – give those eyes some attention. I’m more of your “in the box” makeup artist. I’m very realistic when it comes to my art. I’m a Southern mama who is in her mid-thirties. As much as I wish I had the face, eye shape and confidence to rock a peacock smokey eye – I don’t! What we can do though, is incorporate some of those jewel tone hues in with our neutral/bronze smokey eye. Guess what else… jewel tone liner! It’s a thing, and it can be done beautifully and subtle. I have an emerald green and deep plum eyeliner that is just beautiful this time of year.
I still love my Too Faced Natural Eye Palette – a suggestion would be to swap out that light pink shade for the gold shade in the palette. You can also mix in maybe some plum or olive green with one of the individual shades below!
Add some glitter! The comeback isn’t going anywhere this fall and winter! Add small amounts to the inner corner and middle area of your eye!
Eyeshadow
Eyeliner
My favorite liner is this gorgeous emerald green liner by MAC in color “Minted”. If you’re more of a plum liner gal… check out Urban Decay’s in color “Empire”.
CHEEKS
For the most part, blushes carry over pretty easy. If you’re wearing something that is super poppy (think bubble gum pink) now is the time to transition into colors that consist of peach and plum undertones! One of the reasons so many people wear Orgasm by NARS is because it’s such a great universal blush color that can be carried through to all the seasons.
I still love this three-in-one (blush, bronzer and highlighter). It’s not super pigmented and the bronzing shade is just a perfect, true, bronzer (meaning, it doesn’t go too orange). The highlighter isn’t overpowering either (meaning, not too shimmery! It’s a great product to carry you from season to season.
LIPS
One of the most significant ways that you can make a big bang is with your lip color. It’s also one of the biggest areas that we tend to not feel ourselves. The thought is to trade out your neutral glosses for a deep plum or burgundy. So instead of jumping right into a super bold lip, transition into a sheer gloss that has those deep undertones and then gradually work your way to that deep lip. You can also pair a super simple eye with a bold lip, and that might help your confidence soar as you get used to rocking the boldness of fall.
